Bridging Conference Calls

Hi all, have a special application here that we are trying to do with trixbox, and I keep banging my head on the wall to figure it out.

During Emergency Operations, the State and the National Weather Service conduct regional conference calls for agencies to attend. Due to limited number of lines available, they are limited to one drop per county. We normally bring agencies to our Emergency Operations Center for the County (where we use trixbox) and gather around a conference phone on the operations floor to participate. One of the problems that we have is that not everybody can make it to the EOC for these calls. We have used the conference call feature on trixbox before for local conference calls and it works great! What we are wanting to do is create a conference in trixbox and try and find someway to bridge that across to the regional conference calls. The regional calls are just an 800-number for us usually.

Any ideas or thoughts before I pull what's left of my hair out! Jon

Pretty easy...simply have a user that is participating in the Trixbox meet-me conference do an ad-hoc (through the phone) conference call to the regional 800 number conference. All the audio should be bridged across to both conferences and anyone should be able to speak to anyone else, regardless of the conference they joined.

Easier still

To comply as closely as possible with EOC's existing procedure for bridging to the regional conference calls, do the following:

Under 'General Settings', modify Asterisk Outbound Dial Command Options to reflect 'T'
Note that this is a capital T, not lower case: there is a difference. Also double check that you are modifying the Outbound dial options and not its neighbor which reflects other important dial options not pertinent to the issue under discussion.

Submit and apply changes.

Now whenever you wish to create a conference in trixbox and bridge that across to the regional conference calls:
1) dial the 800-number via a trixbox extension
2) soon as the call is connected ## blind transfer to the number of the conference in trixbox that you have created

revco offered a simple but innovative solution - that of using the ad-hoc (through the phone) conference call facility of the remote user's phone to bridge the EOC’s trixbox conference to the 800-number - a good example of how easily one can accomplish the seemingly impossible if one can think out of the box. However revco's solution has a limitation that only a person experienced is disaster management can apprehend... what if the telecom operator of the remote user has a service outage during the emergency?

The solution I propose uses the existing communication facilities of the EOC, which I assume are appropriately hardened for use during an emergency and in its immediate aftermath, and is in compliance with the EOC's procedures of conferencing.

Hopefully this easier to implement and more robust option will contribute, in some small measure, towards the preservation of the directors full head of hair!

Niel & revco: Thank you both

Niel & revco:

Thank you both for your comments... I had tried revco's idea before, but that made the burden a lot more difficult on some of our "non-techie" people to make sure it was working properly. I will try Niel's idea on our next call; which onfortunately looks like it might be this week, as we have a chance for some nasty weather on Wednesday into Thursday. Thanks to both of you for your great ideas! Jon
