Getting current call status out of asterisk

Need pointer to thread, documentation or advice on how to query call status or have events fire that can let me know programatically what extensions are in use, and with what caller id.
(the goal being to create an inhouse solution that gives information and funcitonality like HUD or FOP, but interated with my inhouse CRM).
So how do I query asterisk db in order to make information available on another platform?

What you are looking for is the Asterisk Manager Interface and Asterisk Gateway Interface.
Please look in the wiki, there is an online copy of the O'Reilly book "Asterisk The Future of Telephony".
