Need more info about registering phones through Fonality.

I run operations for a 180 person manufacturing company. We have about 60 phones in the US, 20 in a branch office in Europe, and another five - ten international sales people that will need phones or softphones.

Right now the US operation is on a Meridian system. EU operation is on a LG ipLDK Nexer system.

We are considering using Fonality.

First, is there a Fonality-specific forum? If so, I apologize for the message here. I couldn't find one.

Second, could someone point me to a FAQ on how the new phone registration process works through Fonality?

It doesn't make sense to me that this is needed. I installed for fun an Asterisk system at home about four years ago. Got the generic fax/modem cards (something 100's) and a few IP phones and got it all to work. I also now use a VOIP service for when I am in the EU (via Broadvoice). Since I was able to configure all that, I don't understand why the software company needs to stay in the loop.

Don't get me wrong, we are not looking to build our own PBX. I want a turn-key system. But, putting in some IP and SIP configs is pretty easy and I don't want to have a middle man involved.

Thanks for your replies.

Fonality is the parent

Fonality is the parent company. In our company we have three different product lines:

PBXtra which is a turn-key hardware/software solution based on our hybrid-hosted technology
trixbox Pro which is a software license only solution based on our hybrid-hosted technology
trixbox CE which is out GPL-licensed open source product

The differences in these products can be found at http://www.trixbox.com/products
When I understand more of what you are looking for or if you have questions about one of the specific products, I would be happy to help you get additional information.

Kerry (and others), I'm

Kerry (and others), with regards to the PBXtra product (we are looking at the Pro and Call center versions)...

I'm trying to understand what the registration/configuration process is with Fonality. And, particularly, can customers use their own IP phones and configure them on their own without needing to talk with Fonality.

From what my IT manager said after a conference call with a Fonality sales rep, it sounds like Fonality has to configure each phone, which I do not like, especially since there appears to be a $60 charge for what my IT manager could do in 2 minutes.

Plus, let's say I want to try another IP phone when I am in Europe, I simply want to put the SIP and related info into the new phone myself, not have to wait for someone at Fonality to do it.

That's what doesn't make any sense to me.

Thanks.

That is correct. With PBXtra

That is correct. With PBXtra you buy phones from Fonality that are pre-configured. You may want to look at trixbox Pro which is the same architecture except that trixbox Pro allows you to provision your own phones.

So, with PBXtra through

So, with PBXtra through Fonality, is there absolutely NO WAY to provision our own phones? Are the phones from Fonality using some secret config or proprietary protocol?

If I recall from when I played with Asterisk, we simply used things like:

Username
Authentication User
Password
Domain/Realm
SIP Proxy

What else does PBXtra need that is unique? What if I want to use a phone other than the 8 that Fonality sells?
