Newbie converting small island nation, need suggestions

I have been given a contract to convert a small Pacific island nation of approximately 250,000 people to trixbox. I am kind of a newbie (I was a bartender until I was handed this contract, but I've played World of Warcraft, so I'm cool) so I'm wondering if I can just get all of you to do a bunch of research for me for free.

I have been given a generous budget of a couple hundred dollars, but I get all the coconuts I want. Is it possible to use a coconut as a telephone? I also have an old 486 running Windows 98, but I have to leave Windows 98 on it (it belongs to the President and he has Quickbooks on it) so I'm going to need to run trixbox on an emulator or something. This shouldn't be a problem as I heard trixbox runs on leenucks or something and that it's like DOS.

So, what do I do now? I don't even know where to start.

I should have made more spelling and grammatical errors, for that real authentic flavor.

I gotta look that up. I live in St. Louis, so I have to drive to IL to get my favorite beer (Dogfish Head 90 minute IPA,) but I did stop at a pub over the weekend and had a both a DFH 90 min and a Hazed and Infused, both on draft, that were pretty good. I'd never had the H&I before.

Yes, I'm a hop-head.

I LOVE my IPAs. I was on a H&I kick for a while before I found Hop Devil and Hop Wallop by Victory Brewery. BluePoint is a Long Island brewery so if you can't get a hold of it ill package some up and send it on over to you but I'll need to see some ID first ;-) That beer started it all for me...

hey ho from M

Hey all,

I'd love to offer a hand with your Island project. I love secluded places...sounds kind of like Never Never Land... anyway I digress

Currently I'm in Bahrain, but I think I could sell some of my music library and catch a flite.

By the way, speaking of beer I like Santa’s Butt Porter

Give me a shout out if you need a hand.

KodaK, I have just spent four hours working on your solution. If you are willing to shell out $1.52 for a used x100P wildcard, plus my usual fee of $0.12/hour, I think you can get this done for $2.00! I am sorry if this exceeds your budget, but I think you need to make the investment since I am sure you will want to offer world wide long free long distance to your 250,000 users.

The first time I saw one of those I was just out of high school (summer 1977 / 78 ) I was over in ca. on the San Francisco Peninsula at that time. I got the bug then..Next thing I know I had four or five 8086 / 8088 around the place....

Man the flash backs...ST251...MFM...RLL controller...turn that 44 meg into 60 meg.

Holy crap finally somebody older than me around here (graduated in 1979)

I was very torn between the PET and a TRS-80. Then I found out about CP/M and the rest was history. I was an S-100 addict until the mid 80's. We ran an 8 line RBBS out of my dorm room in college on a home RS-422 network. Shared a common 5 MB Corvus hard drive. We where always tripping breakers and blowing stuff up.

That was when it was really fun.

So I am allowed to say things like:

  1. I was programming in machine code before you where born
  2. Geeks had HP calculators hanging from their belt in school and could write code for them!
  3. The drinking age was 18 and the worst thing that happened if you drive drunk was you got a free ride home!
  4. You had to move your girlfriend out when your parents came to visit and hide your bong
  5. The only women who had shaved beav**s where porno stars.

I did not derive any where near the satisfaction from saying that than I thought I did. I don't think experience matters in the same way that it used to. It is not real relevant that I can remember all the registers and op codes for a z-80. Experience gives you a framework to understand new things. If you don't stay current your value quickly diminishes.

Fun anyway.....Scott

Got it up

Hey Hey this a family forum....
How big of a viagra dosage did that take????

After Katrina we had lost the old family homestead to downed Oak trees, when we cleaned out the shed there where boxes of trs80 model 100's / commodore / XT's /PS1 / 2 / 300 baud modems ...parts and software. My folks kept all that crap for all these years. Pops complained they all worked, he just could not toss them.
At 16 I graduated high school a year early, got in my Olds 442 drove off..I left home and all that computer stuff behind for the next 6 years.

OH yea
And the worst thing about Drunk Driving has always been the folks who get hit by the Drunk..
People like ME who got run down by a drunk.... TWICE

March 1983; it took 9 months to re-learn to walk (or I should say shuffle) I still go in for my hip / knees

March 1993; it took 6 months before I could put my arms over my head without passing out from the pain when I put them down.

....Damn Drunks......

So if you want to drink and drive..make sure it is a video game you are driving and not tons of steel, please.....

My comment was for humor value on the socio/political change in 30 years not in any way advocating drunk. I am sorry I picked a topic that was personal to you. On a personal note I have never/will never drink and drive. When I was younger the risk of loosing my pilots license was a big enough deterrent, these days I am the designated driver.

Why can't any of you just

Why can't any of you just answer the question! This is very important because I was just about to annex a small Island nation myself and this could be very useful. I have reviewed your coconut network design and believe you had forgotten the string to sip converter. Also shouldn't you remove most of the coconut from the shell? It will dampen the transfer of sound to the string. I would also review the string infrastructure to ensure you have the proper category and gage of string. Too stiff a gage will not propagate the sound waves sufficiently and you will need an inline repeater. I hear Monkey Networks has a decent inline chimp repeater. Has any one had success integrating this with trixbox? I think all the quotes to assistance are also way to high. I feel for a project of this magnitude, I should pay you $.10/hour to help. This is open source you know.

2 VERY Important Questions!!!!!

Class of '78 here, for those scoring at home...and I remember (none too fondly, I might add!!) schelpping (sp?) boxes (yes plural!) of punch cards over to the "Computer Center" on campus...God help you if you dropped one...man, I hated Fortran!

But on to the IMPORTANT QUESTIONS:

1. What do the native island girls look like?
2. Do they have cold beer on the island? (deal breaker!!)

Skipper here

Kodak,

I think you are forgetting the very important problem of providing power to your coconut phones and also consider a possible power failure to your system in the event of monsoon. My buddies Giligan and the Professor are working on a prototype POSP switch (Power Over Solar Panel). Should be ready for production as soon as I patch the minnow...also, I'm no expert, but your ID above definitely does not look real to me...but again, I am no expert!

As far as your error, you are definitely being way to specific with information...try to leave out all of those details of the precise problem...geesh....

Thanks very much to everyone for a very good few minutes of laugh and chuckle. Made my evening - for sure. This should be reprinted and distributed (with permission of course).
