Open Question to All

Hello Everyone

I have one question for everyone.

How Big do we want TB to become?

The reason I ask this is because I Have a Grandstream GXP2020 that has no native support in tb, Kerryg was nice and said why it was not supported, We as users of tb should all stand behide kerry and the gang and say to grandstream become a hardware partner and we will sell and use more of your phones, if not we will use more of Aastra and Polycom phones.

I do not think Grandstream would like a few hundred of us saying that.
Unless we get behide kerry and the gang I think it will become hard and hard for them to give us what we want and why should they if we are not willing to help them? They have done some GREAT WORK here no it is our turn to help them!!

What hardware do you want to use?
What Hardware do your customers want to use?

I am sorry I am be off base here, but to me the more support we can get for tb the better the product will be for us.

I don't even think

I don't even think grandstream should be on the market, period. Terrible call quality and echo issues

Not My Point

ja133
This was not what I was after, regradless of if you love or hate a product is not the point someone out there likes it and will want to use it, this is not about personal feelings, this is about taking a an all ready great product and make it even better, the more hardware support that is built in the better used the product will become. so please everyone put your personal feelings aside and look to the whole picture and not just your little part of it.

In that case, if they

In that case, if they dramatically improve, I'm in
However I hear they're releasing their own PBX system, so I don't see grandstream and trixbox together

Aastra released their own

Aastra released their own PBX and they are still a trixbox hardware partner.

Aastra has also gone above

Aastra has also gone above and beyond with their development and support. Between them and Ethan I feel that any request we make will end up being met. I have no programming knowledge at all so to have someone do the development that clients ask for is huge. This was enough for me to step away from snom. While they have great hardware the ease of deployment and management you get with tb and Aastra hardware is unmatched IMO. Grandstream has never really caught my eye. I see them and my first thought is it looks like a Playschool or Fisher Price my first phone. I have never used them so looks is all I can make fun of at the moment.

edit: All feelings aside though, I agree with the OP. It would be nice for all vendors to be where Aastra and Polycom are at the moment. Giving us a broader selection of hardware to pick from without forfeiting functionality would be great.

It would depend on what

I think it would be beneficial for Granstream from a sales stand point but it would depend on what trixbox requires financially from Grandstream to be a partner and if it makes financial sense for Grandstream to invest in trixbox and only Grandstream can answer that question . Thats my 2cents.

Instead of waiting for

Instead of waiting for Grandstream, Trixbox, or a combination of the two to come together, why not organize a bounty to get the development done? I'm not saying I would commit to doing it because we don't use Trixbox, but I do have some GXP provisioning code written for the rare cases when a customer demands Grandstream phones (because I refuse to manually configure those things).

ethans I would love to do

ethans
I would love to do that, but i have a MAJOR problem.
1. I do not know how to start it.
2. I am broke no cash.

This is the part that sucks for me, as I love this software and if I had the money I would be more then happy to give it to you all for the job you have done and will continue to do!!

Then maybe your job isn't

Then maybe your job isn't necessarily to pay for it, but to organize others to chip in for development. The trick to getting this sort of thing launched is persistence. Not 100% of eyes are on the forums every day, so you need to get to a certain level of traction in order to get the financial commitments from others. If there is enough broad interest in the project and you are persistent with recruiting financial commitments, the project will eventually get a sponsor developer and you will get what you need.

I've seen bounties that were all of dead resuscitated in a matter of days because someone took it upon their self to push others to contribute.

thats how i feel - some

thats how i feel - some people may not be able to do much, but they may be able to find someone who does, this goes the same for clients - if they dont know i offer xyz, they wont tell any of their associates.

i try to spread the word if something deserves it, hopefully something productive will come of it.

if you feel so about it, organize something with ethan, and bring it up every once in a while till it hits the right people.

Here is how this should play

Here is how this should play out from our point of view

1) Do a community campaign (email, letters, phone calls, petition, whatever) to convince Grandstream you would like to see full support of their products in trixbox. If this doesn't work, proceed as follows:

2. Spec out what is needed in the current endpoint manager to provide basic functionality of all of their phones

3. One you have a good spec, then people can help you determine the amount of effort it will take and help come up with a bounty price

4. Post a bounty and post to the thread every few days to get people interested in participating.

your number 1 point was what I was hoping to get started, Is there a way we can get something on the main page of the site to start this drive?

What functionality?

I think it would be a good start to ask what functionality you are looking for? I don't have the money to contribute, but do have a couple of GXP-2000 phones to test on and a great knowledge of PHP. I would be willing to invest some time into it. I unfortunately haven't had the opportunity to contribute more to TrixBox than a smart ass answer every once in a while. I'd love to actually be able to give something back!

TrixBox Rocks!

Hay all BTW Aastra's PBX is

Hay all

BTW Aastra's PBX is actually trixbox Pro with an Aastra wraper. I played around with it when it came out.
I have never used Grandstream phones so It would be great if you could tell me why they should be pushed to join. (besides the fact that you want to get greater number of phones certified) there are other companies that have SIP phones shouldn't we push all to do the same?

If I'm not mistaken, I think

If I'm not mistaken, I think that the GXP-2000 and GXP-2020 use the exact same base configuration file, but the GXP-2020 has a few more options that can be set such as backlight levels, XML idle screen, and a few other goodies. Modifying the endpoint manager should hopefully be fairly easy, I'll crack the source open tomorrow to see what it would take. I can hack php and python a little bit but I'm no code junkie.
