I live in Los Angeles and missed the first class here be about a week. Since I REALLY wanted the training I signed up for the Boston class and flew out there for it.
If the area is really as wide open as you say then you should consider coming to a class that is closer in time instead of mileage.
Heck, Motel6 rooms are cheap enough and if you book in advance then the airfare isn't that bad either. It certainly would cost less that the profit from even a small install if you do it right. And don't forget that it's tax deductable. (Please note that I am not a tax accountant or lawyer...)
You are right.
I've been a network engineer for a while now and have been thinking about doing small installs on the weekends to start off with and then if it picks up maybe present it to the company I work for. I'd be paying for it myself up front. It is looking more and more worth it everyday.
