Looking for VoIP Provider's SIP and IAX2 Servers
Hello Everyone,
I am in the process of moving from Vonage and trying to locate a provider that provides either SIP or IAX2 service. In reviewing the multitude of VoIP providers, I have been doing some ping tests to determine latency to find the best provider in my area.
Some of the tests have been eyeopening in terms of latency and lost packets. The problem I am facing it trying to track down the VoIP providers SIP and IAX2 servers to test them. Is there a list that I can find to test them? Or can people post the ones they know? I think this might be helpful for others too.

Charles, you're right, there are a bunch out there.. I use www.Vitelity.com as my "main" provider for outbound and have 2 DIDs with them, few issues here and there but for the most part, I've been very pleased with them. They are a pay-as-you-go service.
I sugned up for the FREE test account with www.VoipJet.com (opps.. wasn't suppose to say I used them), they give you $0.25 to do some testing and they seemed to work very good on their test server for outbound, was easy to setup. They are for wholesalers/resellers but setting up the test account is fine. I added 5 bucks to my VoipJet account and hoping they won't punt me when they relize I'm not a reseller. ;-)
I also setup www.voipdiscount.com which lets you do some tests calls, then you have to refill your account. They are overseas so you have to do some dialplans (they use to provide on their support page) but wasn't difficult.
I'm sure everyone will have their 2 cents on what their experience has been with all of these and more.. I'm always interested in learning more...
since nbruner already gives details info, I will only list base on my experience in order of priortiy:
Vitelity, voipdisocunt, voicepulse, rapidvox, les.net, Broadvoice, Teliax, Directternination, Talklite. These are the providers I am currently using. Voicepulse s/b to be my number one but sometimes I just loose registrations and it takes forever to re-register. Overall, Vitelity is my able service. Broadvoice is good if you can handle some technical issues. les.net has gotten better for the past few months. I have never had any major issue with any of this providers. Rapidvox is good for outbound only....It is damm cheap....
I like Aretta.com. They are Atlanta based and housed in the NOC there.
I have used several providers with varying degrees of success. I currently use aretta.com (my favorite) carriers.icall.com, voipjet.com and as many other Asterisk servers as possible using Dundi.
Have fun and a great weekend.
What I was thinking was more along these lines:
| Provider | Proxy Point | Average Ping Time (ms) | Packet Loss |
|---|---|---|---|
| BroadVoice.com | proxy.box.broadvoice.com | 14.525 | 0.00% |
| BroadVoice.com | proxy.nyc.broadvoice.com | 19.000 | |
| RapidVox.com | iax.rapidvox.com | 24.113 | 44.00% |
| BroadVoice.com | proxy240.chi.broadvoice.com | ||
| VoIPJet.com | test.voipjet.com | 121.564 | 3.00% |
| VarPhonex.com | sip.varphonex.com | 67.873 | 0.00% |
| SellVoIP.net | sip.sellvoip.net | 117.485 | 0.00% |
| Les.net | did.voip.les.net | 56.866 | 0.00% |
I am trying to make a spreadsheet with to determine ping times. This is a partial list that I have generated. I am trying to locate the providers proxy's so I can ping them.
Those seem fairly high responses and the packet loss isnt great either, although this is subjective and tomorrow these responses may be totally different. I'm not sure creating a spreadsheet will help with that, unless you are going to collect data for a long period.
I would have thought recommendation would have been the best option, although your internet connection may be the issue.
Just as a test I pinged iax.rapidvox.com response was 92ms with 0% packet loss I then pinged test.voipjet.com response was 87ms and 0% packet loss

To be honest with you, any company asking for my drivers license just to use their service will not get my business. Paypal already verified my account and it should be enough. Aretta and icall want copy of customers drivers license. Well, with identity theft and all online scams, there should be a better way to handle their loss. Limiting an account balance to minimun for some time will probably help them. The best voip provider never ask for these security items which I think might fall in the wrong hand with them. What do they actually want from drivers license? I think they are just driving away their customers. Whoever that fake someone credit card can as well fake the DL. That said, I think you will like broadvoice, Vitelity best of all PSTN line for 99% reliability. I have PSTN line which my voip lines fall over to in case voip providers are have tech issues.
