Aastra 55i/57i questions

Hey guys,

Getting ready to purchase an Aastra set and have a couple of questions. First, do I need to purchase a separate POE cable from Aastra to be able to plug into POE switch? Second, difference in display between 55i and 57i, will 55i or even 53i limit the XML applications since the screen is smaller. Will 53i even display XML applications?

Thanks in advance.

Chris

Aastra phones

You need to have an ethernet cable of course, but POE does not need a different type of cable, just a POE switch on the other end, right? Regular cat5e or cat 6 works fine. I would only bother with a POE switch if you need your phones to work when electricity is down and you are getting a generator or battery backup for your switch. Otherwise they usually come with an AC/DC adapter: plug it in.

I don't know about using the 55i or 53i, I don't have enough screen room on my 57i's to be honest, so would not even consider the 55 or 53.

My advice is to stay away

My advice is to stay away from the 53i and 51i if cost isn't an issue. If it is, I'd still recommend a 9133i over those models. The 53i will give you about the same XML experience as the 9133i. The XML experience on the 55i and 57i will be MUCH better.

The 55i is a great phone and essentially equivalent to the 57i's amount of usable LCD real estate, the difference being the top keys on the 55i aren't LCD-based, so you need to stick a printout for the labels or hand write them on the provided labels. The 57i and 55i are both great phones, and you won't be disappointed with either.

Thanks guys, I am still unclear if on POE and cable with Aastra. I definitely want POE so do I need a power injector cable or will standard patch cord work?

patch cord

a patch cord will not give you poe unless you are connected to a poe port on your switch. to get power you will need either the poe injector, the poe port OR the power supply plugged into the dc input connection on your phone.

I am using a POE switch.

I am using a POE switch. With my Polycom 501's I had to buy special cable, I think they call it injector cable, even though I was using a POE switch. Never used Aastra so was hoping standard would do it, 501's do not work with standard patch cord.

501 nonstandard PoE

The Polycom IP501's were pre-PoE and don't use industry-standard 802.3af PoE, hence the need to buy a special cable. The newer IP550s use standard PoE so standard cable is fine.

The basic setup for standards-compliant IP phones is:
PoE Switch -> standard patch cable -> Aastra 57i phone. That's it, nice and simple.

In small installations we often use D-Link 1228P PoE switches with Aastra phones.

Thanks nucleon, how would

Thanks nucleon, how would you rate the D-Link in comparison to Linksys SRW224P?

IMHO, stay away from D-Link

IMHO, stay away from D-Link PoE switches, especially with Aastra phones. There is some flakiness with certain hardware models.

PoE

I have use Trendnet PoE switches which are the same Dlink switches with changes on firmware. The phones I have use are Grandstream, ATCOM, Linksys and Aastra without any issue. The Linksys and the Aastra have the extension sidecar without any issues. The 24 port PoE has 4 extra ports for Gigabite and 2 Gbic ports for fiber
