Delay when answering?

i seem to be having an issue with my phones. at least, i think it's my phones.
you'll have to pardon me; i apologise beforehand, i'm a trixbox/freepbx/asterisk n00b (but not a GNU/Linux newb).

they all seem to ring fine (except for one phone, which either never rings or doesn't start ringing for about 2 seconds behind everyone else) but when you pick up, trixbox doesn't seem to realize this (i.e. actually connect the call) for about 5 seconds.

i feel it's possibly either a firewall/routing issue (as we've been making some changes here and there recently) or it's some sort of configuration error.

You didn't specify what make

You didn't specify what make and model phones you have, or your network topology. These are just two of the things you'll need to provide before anyone can make anything other than an educated guess.

Other relevant information would be: what exactly were these changes implemented recently? How are you configuring the phones? If it's through a tftp boot server, have you tried copying the config from the bad phone to another phone to see if it happens there too? Have you tried plugging the phone into another port on the network to see if it behaves the same way?

i was wondering what info

i was wondering what info you'd need. :) thanks.

model phones: all models in use are polycom ip500's

network topology: pbx is in colo (offsite), phones are behind a m0n0wall router. the phones have their own subnet here on a vlan (but are still pointed to our dns servers and behind our firewall, etc.), and the pbx is on it's own dns record.

as far as the changes implemented, i'm not sure, and there's one of the issues. the sysadmin responsible for them is usually responsible enough to tell me if something he did would affect something in my realm but we're all human and can forget, so i'll be working with him on that today or tomorrow.

the phones are configured via xml configs which are pulled from a proftpd server on the pbx. they are pulling everything just fine- contact lists, everything.

and the weird thing is that it seems to hop from phone to phone. it's USUALLY one certain phone, but sometimes that one works like the others and another phone experiences the delay in ring.

Start with your logs, see if

Start with your logs, see if anything is complaining. If you can't find anything, then you're going to develop a lifelong friendship with wireshark.

I would start with a network capture

Go get Wireshark and a hub and plug it all in at that phone, this will tell you everything. Then work your way back. If you see the INVITE immediately then you have an issue with that one phone. If you don't see the INVITE when you should then work your way back in the network.

Also a quick test as mentioned previously is to switch configs with this phone and another, that will help eliminate hardware.

If you need help with Wireshark;

A thing to do if you find it is the hardware is to format the file system from the advanced menu and this will help you start from a clean slate.
