Common trixbox Pro misconceptions
1. You can only have one level of IVR menu is Standard Edition
- You can have a complex multi-level call tree with SE – this means it has unlimited nesting. The only limitation of SE is not being able to do routing based on the DID to different submenus. This is typically done by larger businesses that have different inbound phone numbers going to different groups or sub-companies.
2. You are limited to 10 extensions with Standard Edition
- Actually, trixbox Pro Standard Edition (the free edition) has unlimited extensions. We simply feel that the selected feature set in Standard Edition is best suited for businesses under 20 or 10 employees. Again, to reiterate there is *not* restriction on extensions on Standard Edition.
3. My phone system will not work if the internet is down
- Internet down? No problem. Your phone system will still function as normal. This means calls trixbox Pro will still send and receive calls. Voicemail will work, etc. Of course, if your Internet is down you won’t be able to use VoIP, and your telecommuter phones won’t connect. Add/moves/changes using trixbox Pro’s hosted interface also won’t work during the period of your outage. Empirical evidence has shown us that the likelihood of you needing to do an add/move/change at the same time as your Internet is down is statistically improbable.
4. All my phone calls go through the Fonality servers
- Not true at all, even with trixNet, the Fonality servers are not involved in the signaling or media path of any phone call
5. Fonality’s data center stores my private audio such as voicemail, call recordings, and voice prompts
- No. All of these files are stored on your local premise. Our data center only backs up your configuration files (so that you can quickly restore your system’s configuration in case of theft, accident, or hardware failure). If you need to backup your call recordings or voicemail files you will need to do this on your own.
6. If Fonality goes away, I will be left without a phone system!
- Not true. First you will have your server, all your phones, and HUD as part of your original investment. You can easily switch to another Asterisk-based system. On top of that, for $199 you can purchase “Software Escrow” from us. This means that if something terrible happens to Fonality, the escrow company will ship you all of our management software on a CD.
7. You cannot do call forwarding with Standard Edition
- Using SE’s User Panel, any user can setup call forwarding to another extension or regular phone number. That call can even hunt back from another extension to the original extension’s voicemail. SE is missing “Advanced Call Forwarding” which allows an admin to create a virtual extension that is mapped to a submenu, extension, phone number, etc.
8. A trixbox Pro system in inherently insecure because it requires internet access.
- There should be no reason to place a trixbox Pro system on a public IP address or DMZ if the proper ports are enabled in the firewall. With only a VPN connection to the Fonality data center being used, the trixbox Pro system is only as insecure as the physical security of your infrastructure.
9. I don't like Fonality having access to my call data reports.
- Go to the Options tab, go to the Settings screen and disable Call Reporting and we will not pull your logs to our servers for processing.
This is EXACTLY what I was asking for in my other post - Traditional vendors generate REAMS of marketing information of this type on their offerings - I AM NOT asking that you stop what you are doing and sit down and document every nook and crannie of the system, but precise, bite-size chunks of information about what the system is (and is not) is EXACTLY what the reseller community (and the end user community) needs to make an informed decision.
Thanks! Any time you are so inclined, keep it coming!

We are only human and have seen the product for so long and know it too well. So what we needed to do was sit back for a couple of days and see what people where having problems grasping, mostly from us not doing a good enough job explaining it. As we see more things that we can explain clearer, we will add to this list. Hopefully it helps people out.
"With only a VPN connection to the Fonality data center being used, the trixbox Pro system is only as insecure as the physical security of your infrastructure"
This VPN gives Fonality a key to my backdoor!
If you anxious about security, this alone might be a reason to put the pro version in some DMZ container
For us moving to SE is not possible due to a couple of missing features:
1) Cannot have DIAL 9 requirement (most people in a home would not get it).
2) Need DID dialing so that I can have a home line and small business line
Optional, nice to haves:
3) Would like to be able to have two or more home lines in same call (conf)
4) Need to be able to simul ring two lines (my extension and my cell phone)
5) Privacy manager functionality requiring a caller to enter a valid number
While the CE version offers a lot more, I think we could deal with SE if these were included.
Just some quick input.
