Trixbox pro or shoretel?

hi,

I am on the verge of issuing a PO for a shortel system until I found Trixbox, I would apreicate any sensible replys and thoughts.

I am considering buying a shoretel 120 with there endpoints

I deploy remote communication systems for short term usage, ie. construction sites, Disater recovery, events etc.
I deploy in two scenarios:

Scenario 1:

I run xDSL (bonded) and VSAT into the site, split out via a nice Bandwidth management appliance to ensure QoS on my Voip VLan. I have a PoE layer 3 switch and hard wire as many phones as I can. ( prob 40 phones)

If phones are out with the main switch area, I deploy a wireless mesh system that supports Vlan trunking, I then take and ethernet conection out into a vlan switch then wire phones as and when they are needed. ( prob about 10 phones)

I run a few sip trunks for my connectivity and everything should work well.

scenario 2:

I use only VSAT and try not to have anything expensive onsite as it gets damaged, so ideally a telecommuter type role. I need to support 5-10 phones, with the PBX hosted off site.

I have all the IP connectivity sorted, VSAT has proven to work well. The xDSL bonding is in testing at the moment.

So should I go for Trixbox Pro or with the shoretel?

Thank you for reading this!

I honestly don't know enough

I honestly don't know enough about the Shoretel system to speak about why the trixbox Pro system would work better for you. I do think the trixbox Pro solution is an excellent choice because it's IP infrastructure was designed from the ground up for remote workers. Since trixbox Pro uses the hybrid hosted architecture, there are no special considerations for setting up remote access to the system for configuration and maintenance and the built-in alerts system will tell you when something is going wonky with the box.

I would recommend installed the free Standard Edition and getting a feel for how it works and then asking specific product questions that we can answer. If anyone else on the forum knows more about how the two systems compare against each other than I am sure they will speak up.

I will give you 1 reason to

I will give you 1 reason to not use Shoretel.

Shoretel is not SIP based. They are only beginning to support SIP end points. You can only use Shoretel phones and Shoregear switches. The phones themselves are MGCP not SIP.

Try asking Shoretel how to setup a SIP trunk. They have a program of "authorized" SIP trunk providers however it is not documented well and the field engineers have not been trained.

SIP is a feature you have to pay for in Shoretel.

Shoretel uses the same Monolithic pay for everything model as Cisco UCM.

Just say not to Shoretel!

hmmm choice's!

Thanks for the reply

first off, Kerr, I downloaded trixbox Feb 07 and used it for my events, it worked well with the cisco end points(sip).

I am now in a position to purchase a system, I supose I mistakenly thought that if you pay good money you get get good equipment so was looking at shoretel. Im sure it would work well but there lititure on there equipment is sparse to say the least.

I will load in TB pro and give it a whirl, I just dont want to start messing about with custom config's when im in the middle of a field ( my bad planning i know)!

Scott: Thank you for your thoughts, so are you advocating me spending my hard earned cash on a TB setup or just not recommending i spend it on Shoretel?

I know in the grand scheme of things my requirements are not exactly up there with the 17 site distributed systems so I thank you both for taking the time in replying.

So do you think that TB pro will do what I require as opposed to spending over the odds on another solution?

Regards
David

What features are you looking to customize? If you let us know in advance then we can tell you if these features are accessible from the GUI.

Shoretel is a closed appliance. Once you buy it you are completely married to Shoretel. I am not saying it is bad quality.

I think everyone around here tries to help everyone the same, irrespective of the size of the deployment. Not sure what you mean by this.

I am on the CE side. If you want to roll your own we are here to help.

There are lots of people here that can help you with Pro.
