7941G opinions with Trixbox
Hi all of you cisco lovers. I wanted to see if I could get some feeback from those who have used this phone with their Trixbox systems. I'm guessing that I would have to first load the sip firmware.
Are they very hard to configure? Is the quality good. Are all the phone features compatible.... (saw some posts about modifications to get MWI working, but not sure if this is still an issue..)
I wanted to get some of these off ebay and put a smartnet on it, but was curious to other's experiences. I would be running it off a PoE switch and the price looks good. Any feedback is appreciated.
Thanks,
Will
So no one is using this phone with their trixbox systems? I had an opportunity to buy some new / used at 70% off retail but don't want to if you can't use them or they are a pain in the rear to get working. Like I said any feedback is appreciated... I have searched google and the forums here, but the info is scarce at best as far as how people feel about the 7941G
I would recommend that you are confident that the phones are not bricked. The o/s used by those particular phones are rather "prissy" and if not well respected during programming can (as i have heard but not experienced first hand) leave you with a cisco branded plastic brick.
Once they are programmed properly and connect (my 7970 took me a month to get working properly) they work very well and are incredibly clear - imho the best. One simply should be prepared for the fussyness of a cisco phone.
The 7940/7960 phones are *much* more forgiving and easier to program - for what thats worth.
Just thought I would post an update to my post. I bought one of these off of Ebay for $109.00 new in the box.
1. Took out of Box
2. Used Trixbox Endpoint manager to create needed files (used 7971 settings to create xml file and edited the name of the firmware to look for)
2. Flashed with the most recent SIP firmware (used posts here and at http://www.voip-info.org/wiki/view/Asterisk+phone+cisco+79x1+xml+...)
3. Added "buggymwi=yes" to sip_custom.conf (to fix the buggy Voicemail light)
4. Adjusted dialplan.xml file to minimize the delay after dialing extensions and phone numbers
5. Bragged and gloated to all my buddies :-)
Very painless, inexpensive, and just works............
I like the phone. It seems well built and is professional grade. Now if I can only figure out BLF and Intercom I'll be set............
I have a trixbox deployed with several Cisco 7941Gs, 7961Gs and a 7970G phone, all are working great and have most of the features you would expect them to have.
They are running SIP load POS-08-2-00 and it works like a charm.
Once you get use to the SIPDefault.cnf and SIPMACADDRESS.cnf files customizing and setting them up is a breeze.
Let me know if you want some help, I would be happy to lend a hand.
Regards,
Enduser -
No real intercom in the Cisco's. What you need to do is setup another extension on the phone and make it autoanswer. Then place this extension in the paging group and when you dial the "Paging Group" the extension will answer and you are paged.
2103 -- Normal Extension / Ring Group.
2203 -- Private DID Number.
2303 -- Auto Answer Intercom.
BUT Be aware that anyoone can dial the "Paging Extension" and monitor the room !
Hi all,
I bought a Cisco 7941g a few months ago. Uploaded SIP 8.3.1 firmware with windows tftp32 server, generated a SEPxxx.xml file and the phone worked very good!!!. I used it a long time with Xorcom Rapid appliance. MWI worked perfectly.
A week ago I moved to trixbox 2.6 and problems started... Endpoint manager was really a disaster, I have to provision the 7941g manually, with my own generated SEPxxx.xml file.
Anyway, MWI didn't work, nor using buggymwi=yes. I started to hate trixbox just a little...
Well, I decided to downgrade 7941g to SIP 8.0.2 firmware, I heard this fw works good with MWI. Downgrade failed, and now I got a very nice and expensive brick!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The phone ask for a DHCP address, when it receive one, it just freezes. No way on making the phone to ask for the new firmware. I've tried with tftp option 66 and option 150... I did factory default a lot of times, but the same happens.............. :::::((((((((((
If it is grabbing a DHCP it is not bricked.
The phones can be a bit touchy to configure, however they work great. MWI and all.
Take a look at your tftp logs while the phone boots with tftp /var/log/aftpd.log -f
Please read this guide carefully
It took me several reads until I really understood what was going on. With a little practice you can upgrade a phone all the way from SCCN frimware to dialtone on trix in 10 minutes.

Thanks very much for your answer!.
I've been making some tests with atftpd and dhcpd with Trixbox, but without sucess...
Here is my dhcpd.conf (my trixbox is at 192.168.1.101):
----------
ddns-update-style interim;
ignore client-updates;
option voip-tftp-servers code 150 = ip-address;
option voip-tftp-servers 192.168.1.101;
subnet 192.168.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0
{
option routers 192.168.1.1;
option subnet-mask 255.255.255.0;
option nis-domain "trixbox.casa";
option domain-name "trixbox.casa";
option domain-name-servers 192.168.1.1;
option time-offset -3;
option ntp-servers 192.168.1.101;
option tftp-server-name "192.168.1.101";
range dynamic-bootp 192.168.1.128 192.168.1.254;
default-lease-time 7200;
max-lease-time 14400;
}
-----------------
dhcpd is running good, all my machines get an IP address from the pool. Cisco 7941g also gets an IP address, look at dhcpd.leases:
------------------
lease 192.168.1.253 {
starts 5 2008/05/09 14:43:14;
ends 5 2008/05/09 16:43:14;

next binding state free;

uid "\001\000\0310\310\213\307";
client-hostname "SEP001930C88BC7";
}
------------------
tftpd is also running good, I've been trying it with a windows tftp client and I can get all the files in /tftpboot. As far as I can see, now 7941g is not contacting atftpd... Here is atftpd.log when the phone used to work (few days ago :-( ...):

Any ideas on what's going on???. It seems the 7941g is not contacting tftp server. I would like to try enter the phone via serial console and assign tftp-server-address manually, via IOS commands, but I don't know the serial console pinout.
